Snakes Found in Los Angeles
Southern California is home to dozens of snake species. Here are the three most commonly encountered in LA County — including one that is dangerously venomous.
Southern Pacific Rattlesnake
VenomousA venomous pit viper native to Southern California. Typically grows about 2-4 feet long and has a heavy body with dark brown or gray blotches. It is recognized by the distinctive rattle at the end of its tail and should always be observed from a safe distance. A bite is a serious medical emergency that can cause severe tissue damage, serious health complications and in some cases death.
Gopher Snake
A non-venomous snake native to North America, typically growing 3-7 feet long. They usually have yellow, cream or tan coloring with dark brown or black blotches. When threatened they may flatten their head, hiss loudly and shake their tail to mimic a rattlesnake.
California King Snake
A non-venomous snake native to California, typically growing about 3-4 feet long. It is commonly recognized by its black or dark brown body with white or cream-colored bands or stripes. King snakes are powerful constrictors and are known for eating rodents, lizards and other snakes including rattlesnakes.
